A Victorian farmer made a memorable TV debut by cracking a rude joke while being interviewed by Karl Stefanovic on TODAY this morning.

Will Jelbart was running a farm tourism business in South Gippsland three years ago when one of his petting calves, Yogie, sucked the wedding ring off a man’s finger.

Host Karl Stefanovic, leading up to a question, speculated about the man going home to tell his wife he had lost his wedding ring because "a cow sucked it off".

"Maybe his wife was asking what else the cow was sucking off," Mr Jelbart interjected, prompting Stefanovic to burst into fits of laughter.

"Maybe I shouldn't have said that on telly," the smiling farmer said.

"I'm glad you said it brother and not me," the TODAY host replied.

Stefanovic regained his composure and completed the interview, hearing how the farmer had now extracted the ring from the animal and was waiting for the owner to come forward and claim it.

Mr Jelbart hoped the owner of the ring would come forward to collect it, and said it would be easily identifiable by a date inscribed inside the band.

"Hopefully he's not divorced."

Nearly one year ago — on February 17, 2011 — a similar double-entendre moment on the TODAY show about a “long, stabby thing” became a viral sensation.

The series of accidentally inappropriate comments saw morning show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Ben Fordham laughing so hard they had to leave the set.
