NSW music festival Playground Weekender has been cancelled two days before the event was due to begin, with police and the State Emergency Service (SES) citing fears of flooding.

Thousands of punters were planning on attending the three-day festival at Wiseman's Ferry, north of Sydney, but emergency staff said its location was potentially unsafe if flooding took place.

"The safety of the guests, artists and staff at the event, and on their way to and from the event, is our main priority," promoter Andy Rigby said.

"Reluctantly we have followed advice that it would be unsafe to ask people to travel in these weather conditions, and as such the event cannot go ahead."

The festival location on the banks of the Hawkesbury River made it particularly vulnerable to flooding, and with large numbers of people at the event, evacuation procedures would have been very difficult.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicted moderate flooding with the chance of heavy flooding for the area.

Promoters are now seeking an alternate venue for the event, which was due to feature performances from Boy and Bear, Roots Manuva and Chic featuring Nile Rodgers.
