Singer Delta Goodrem and fiance Brian McFadden have been threatened by a man via the social networking website Twitter.

A man who has named himself Saviour Mankind has professed his love and ownership" of Goodrem through Twitter, forcing the high-profile couple to consult security experts, News Limited newspapers say.

McFadden, a regular user of Twitter, has responded to some of the threatening messages, sparking fears he may have egged on the stalker.

Since the couple left Sydney on a charity tour this week, Saviour Mankind has posted a stream of messages talking of murder and rape, News Limited said.

The couple has threatened to obtain a restraining order.

A spokeswoman for Goodrem and McFadden, Jennifer Fontaine, told News Limited: "We're very much aware of this matter but we've been advised to not make any comment at this time. We have security looking at it".

On another website, Saviour Mankind says he is schizophrenic, and hears voices and believes he is a messiah figure.

News Limited said he wrote a letter to McFadden that said: "Brian you are Jewish leave Delta immediately, if you do not leave and as I am spoken for by the faith of love, we will return to the days of Spanish inquisitions, how did it end for them? You are lucky we don't have the death penalty in Australia".
