Baker was nominated for his new hit drama The Mentalist.

Aussie babe Rose Byrne, nominated for best supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Damages, missed out with the award going to Cherry Jones in 24.

And Australian director Michael Rymer, nominated for his work on the new sci-fi series Battlestar Gallactica, missed out to Rod Holcomb from medical drama ER.

"I'm so humble to be here in this room let alone up on this stage."

Other nominees for the Lead Comedy Actress award were Christina Applegate, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sarah Silverman and Mary-Louise Parker.

Collette's show, the United States of Tara, is written by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody.

It was Collette's first nomination in a comedy category.

The Sydney-born actress was previously nominated for an Oscar for her supporting performance in the 1999 thriller Sixth Sense and an Emmy in 2007 for the TV mini-series Tsunami: The Aftermath.
