The Opera House is staging a free open day as part of an entertainment and arts festival in Sydney.

Visitors to the Sydney Opera House are being treated to free behind the scenes tours on Sunday.

The rare opportunity to get free access the usually off limits backstage areas, watch performers in rehearsal and peek into dressing rooms has only been offered once before, five years ago, and about 25,000 people took advantage of it then.

The open day begins at 10am (AEDT) and the highlight of the day will performances by the Gondwana national indigenous children's choir and Sydney children's choir on the Forecourt at 11am.

The open day is part of Crave Sydney, a month-long festival showcasing the city's entertainment, food and art.
