Don Lane's public farewell will be a "memorial celebration" to thank his fans, his son PJ says.

The beloved TV star died of a dementia-related illness on October 22, after struggling with the disease for the past 18 months.

In accordance with Jewish custom, he was buried in a private service less than a day after his death.

Lane said Thursday's memorial at South Sydney Juniors in Kingsford would be a way of saying thanks to fans on behalf of his dad.

"He always wanted an opportunity to give back to the fans, and this is really that opportunity," he told Macquarie Radio.

"The fans meant so much to him, and I think that's what this memorial is really all about.

"He would always make an effort with the fans, and that's who we have to appeal to in this."

Lane confirmed Bert Newton, Rhonda Burchmore, Helen Reddy and comedy writer Mike McColl-Jones would all perform at the event.

"They jumped right on it. They'd say, `we'd be honoured'," he said.

"And it's so great to have these people and such great performers who were so close to him as a part of this thing."

A former basketballer now following his father's path into entertainment, PJ said he would perform a rendition of They're Playing Our Song in honour of his dad.

Alzheimer's Australia will be taking donations at the memorial.

* The Don Lane Memorial Celebration will be held at the South Sydney Juniors Club in Kingsford on Thursday at 9.30am.

Free tickets to the service will be available on a first come, first-served basis.
