Peter Broelman - an Adelaide-based freelance political cartoonist - has won the Australian cartoonist of the year at the 25th annual Stanley Awards.
Broelman, whose cartoons appear in a host of regional newspapers across Australia, also won the Stanley for editorial/political cartoonist at the weekend.
He thanked the global financial crisis, the outbreak of swine flu, asylum seekers and his editors for "not giving me a hard time".
Other cartoonists honoured with Stanleys were Brisbane-based Gary Clark for his comic strip Swamp, Melbourne's Matt Golding for his single gag cartoons, freelance illustrators Anton Emdin (illustrator), David Follett (media graphic artist) and John Spooner of The Age for his caricatures.
The Australian Cartoonists Association also awarded Mr Squiggle creator and former Bulletin cartoonist, 88-year-old Norman Hetherington, with the Jim Russell Award for his outstanding contribution to Australian cartooning.
And it announced the first inductees to the Australian Cartooning Hall of Fame, including Ginger Meggs creator Jim Bancks, Stan Cross, Will Dyson, Percy Leason, Norman Lindsay and Pat Oliphant.
