Morning radio broadcaster Steve Price has quit 2UE after eight years.

Price said the decision came as he decided to pursue new challenges.

"After 22 years with Southern Cross Broadcasting/Fairfax Media, originally with 3AW and over the past eight years with 2UE, I feel now is the right time to explore new opportunities and ideas that I plan to develop across various media," Price said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time in both Melbourne and Sydney and the fantastic people I've not only worked with, but importantly conversed with, on a daily basis on the phone and in the studio."

Price has been in the process of renegotiating his three-year contract.

He has hosted the morning slot for two years and said 2UE had asked him to stay on in 2010.

It's understood he failed to reach an agreement on his salary, which is estimated at about $800,000, with rumours he was asked to take a pay cut.

2UE general manager Tim McDermott wished Price well.

"We respect Steve's decision to seek new challenges in his career and wish him all the best," McDermott said.

"We're also excited about the fresh new line-up we will have in place for 2010."

Friday will be Price's last day on air.

A new host will be announced then.
