Teen heartthrob actor Channing Tatum has told a US magazine how an on-set mishap saw his penis burnt by scalding hot water.

The 29-year-old star of Step Up and GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra told Details magazine that he had to be hospitalised after boiling hot water was accidentally poured down a wetsuit he was wearing on a film set.

Tatum was supposed to have warm water poured down his wetsuit to stop him getting hypothermia while shooting a movie in Scotland.

But an oversight saw boiling kettle water poured down his front before it had been diluted with colder water, severely burning him.

"I was trying to pull the suit away from my body to somehow get away from the boiling water, and the more I pulled the suit away, the lower the water went," he said.

Tatum told the magazine that in the hour-long drive from the set of ancient Rome movie The Eagle of the Ninth to the nearest hospital, he told his driver that he may have to be knocked unconscious because of the unbearable pain.

"I had five guys looking at my shriveled, burned penis," Tatum said of his hospital visit.

Even though Tatum said the mishap was the most painful thing he had ever experienced, he told the magazine he had made a full recovery.
