North America's smallest known dinosaur has been identified by scientists.

The 120cm-tall Fruitadens haagarorum has been labelled a "roadrunner on steroids" by Luis Chiappe of the Dinosaur Institute of the Natural History Museum.

While the bones of four individuals were originally discovered three decades ago in western Colorado, the species has only just been fully reconstructed and given a name.

The dinosaur is believed to have eaten plants and insects and lived in the late Jurassic period about 150 million years ago.
