Famous Australian landmarks Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef have moved one step closer to becoming one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

The stunning local icons are among the 28 finalists of the online competition for the 'New7Wonders of Nature'.

They will compete against international locations including the USA's Grand Canyon, Vietnam's Halong Bay and New Zealand's Milford Sound.

The final list will be announced in mid-2011 and is expected to receive over a billion votes.
