A group of Spanish students have captured amazing pictures of space 32km above the ground using only a balloon and a $120 camera.

The helium balloon inflated to nine-and-a-half metres and travelled upwards of about 270m per minute after its launch in Catalonia last month.

The balloon fell back to the ground when it reached an altitude of about 32km and the camera was retrieved, undamaged from the harsh conditions.
