A mammoth blue whale has washed up on a New Zealand beach.

The dead mammal, which measures 21m in length, was discovered on the northern tip of New Zealand's south island near the remote Whanganui Inlet.

The 150-tonne female is covered in bites from great white sharks, but authorities say this may have happened after death.

Due to size and accessibility issues, the carcass will be left on the beach to rot.
