Cate Blanchett has taken a battering from the press after wearing a knitted dress to the glitzy opening of an exhibition in Melbourne.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ.com compared the Oscar-winner's dress to a throwover from the set of '90s sitcom Rosanne, while the Daily Mail said it looked like "nana’s winter bed cover".

The Mirror's 3am girls described it as the "worst red carpet frock of the week/month/entire history of the world".

Blanchett was in Melbourne for the opening of the Screen Worlds exhibition.
