Is it a hedgehog, pin cushion or giant toilet brush? This edifice may seem bizarre but is actually Britain's way of showing China how modern-thinking it is.

The $42m Seed Cathedral will be the centrepiece of the UK's pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo, starting in May.

UK Trade & Investment CEO Andrew Cahn hopes to update China's Victorian-era view of Britain as a "heritage country, a traditional economy" to thinking of it as a "cutting-edge, forward-looking country." He hopes to attract foreign investors and students.
