An unusual species of Australian fish which has hand-like appendages has been given official classification.

The CSIRO has published a new report into the 14 known species of handfish, creatures that crawl along the bottom of the ocean using their hand-shaped fins, according to ichthyologist Daniel Gledhill.

"We're still finding many species, often in areas you'd think we know quite a bit about," he said.

"The ocean is still a wild west — we're always making discoveries."
