Music icon Whitney Houston has died in a Los Angeles hotel room aged 48.

The legendary singer first took to the stage in her local church choir at age 11 and was at the peak of her fame in the 1980s and 90s, when she released hit singles How Will I Know, Saving All My Love for You, and I Will Always Love You.

She released her last album I Look To You in 2009, by which time her majestic voice had been ravaged by years of drug abuse.

The Hollywood icon was equally well-known for her tumultuous relationship with Bobby Brown, who she divorced in 2006 after widespread media coverage of their alcohol and drug abuse.
