More than 300,000 Australians are suffering from glaucoma however half of those afflicted do not know they have it, according to Glaucoma Australia.
During World Glaucoma Week, the not-for-profit organisation is urging all Australians over 40 to have regular eye check-ups in order to fight the "sneak thief of sight".
Glaucoma Australia says the 'silent' eye condition is the leading worldwide cause of irreversible blindness and restricts people's quality of life.
"Even simple daily activities like driving, locating items, walking on stairs and recognising faces can be difficult for glaucoma patients to manage," National executive officer Beverley Lindsell said.
"Research shows that patients' report walking at slower pace, that they are prone to falling and avoid driving altogether."
However, when glaucoma is detected early it can be treated and can slow or even halt the damage to the eyes.
Those who are over 40 years of age or have a family history of glaucoma are most at risk of developing the condition.
World Glaucoma Week runs from March 7 to 13 and aims to raise awareness about the importance of eye health.
