Australian cancer researchers have discovered a link between spreading waistlines and some cancers.

Results of a Victorian study, based on 20 years of monitoring, show that a waistline greater than 100cm for men and 85cm for women significantly increased the risk of cancer.

"The results show being overweight or obese is associated with the risk of several types of cancer," Professor Graham Giles, director of the Cancer Council’s Cancer Epidemiology Center in Victoria, said in a report.

Colon, post-menopausal breast, endometrial, kidney and oesophageal cancers had the most common link to obesity.

For men with a waistline above 100cm, the risk was found to increase 72 percent for colon cancer and 43 percent for prostate cancer.

For women with a waistline above 85cm, risk was found to be 22 percent higher for breast cancer and 33 percent higher for colon cancer.
