A dengue fever outbreak has been declared in the north Queensland town of Tully, with three cases now confirmed.

The virus spread to the town late last month and while Queensland Health medical director Dr Jeffrey Hanna says the outbreak remains small, it is no time to be complacent.

"There is a large amount of people movement between Tully and the rest of north Queensland, including Townsville and Cairns where historically we have had regular dengue outbreaks," Dr Hanna said in a statement on Thursday.

"With the recent rains and the warm temperatures, I strongly urge all Tully residents to take preventive steps to stop the outbreak from spreading to other nearby towns."

The Dengue Action Response Team has visited Tully and completed yard inspections as well as setting traps to kill dengue mosquitoes.

The three Tully infections are the only reported cases in north Queensland.

The virus is wanning in the region, with the Townsville outbreak officially declared over last Friday.

Last wet season, more than 1000 people contracted the virus in outbreaks from Cape York to Townsville.
