A young British woman has died just five months after receiving a lung transplant from someone who had smoked for 30 years.

The family of Lyndsey Scott have spoken of their "horror" at finding out the 28-year-old woman, who suffers cystic fibrosis, was given the tainted organs, the Daily Mail reports.

Her father Allan said the family learned the truth after applying to see her medical notes.

Miss Scott had the transplant in February last year and died in July. She had been on a donor waiting list for nearly two years.

Mr Scott believes his daughter would have refused the operation if she knew the lungs came from a lifelong smoker.

"For someone to have a major, major operation like a double lung transplant and not be given all the facts is unthinkable," he was quoted by the Mail as saying.

The newspaper claims a shortage of donors is forcing surgeons to use less healthy organs.

The British Transplant Society said it was often better for patients to have surgery even if the organ was not ideal.

Miss Scott's case has been referred to Britain's health ombudsman.
