Hollywood is about to turn blue, following in Australia and New Zealand's footsteps.

The glow is part of the Blue September, an initiative to raise awareness about cancers affecting men and urge them to take preventive action.

The concept was developed in New Zealand in 2008, expanded to Australia the following year when Sydney Harbour Bridge and other Australian landmarks lit up.

In Sydney, the Harbour Bridge and in Melbourne, Victoria's Parliament House will be lit with blue lights, while in Hollywood, the famed Capitol Records Building, the Paramount Studios gate and water tower, and the Roosevelt Hotel will be bathed in blue.

"Capital Records hopes that by turning the tower blue it will capture the public's attention on the great work that Blue September is doing to raise awareness for early detection of prostate cancer," Jim Kuha, senior director of EMI Music North America, said.

"It's our small part in making a big difference."

Each year, more than 22,000 Australian men die of cancer and in many cases the deaths can be prevented through healthy lifestyle decisions and early detection.
