A British woman who died after receiving illegal cosmetic treatment to enhance her buttocks sought the procedure in the hopes a bigger bottom would make her famous.

London woman Claudia Aderotimi died in hospital after receiving silicone injections in a hotel room in the US city of Philadelphia, the Sun reported.

Ms Aderotimi, 20, reportedly suffered agonising chest pains about 12 hours after the procedure before dying in hospital at 1.30am on Tuesday morning.

Friends told the Sun that her confidence had dropped because she had been rejected for a music video because her "booty" was too small.

Talent scout Tee Ali said Ms Aderotimi, who performed under the pseudonym Carmella London, often wore padded trousers to make her buttocks look bigger.

"She loved to dance and had a drive to be famous," he said.

"The problem was she didn't have no butt, and she wanted a butt."

It is believed Ms Aderotimi was injected with industrial sealant instead of the more expensive silicone normally used in legal breast enlargements.

A medical examiner said it appeared Ms Aderotimi died after the silicone entered her vascular system, stopping her heart.

She had her first bottom enhancement in November last year but it is unknown if the same people carried out the procedure.

Prominent UK plastic surgeon Rajiv Grover said buttock augmentation surgery using liquid silicone was like "Russian roulette".

"Buttock augmentation isn't very commonly performed, which is probably why these girls have resorted to going abroad," he said.

"You get away with it sometimes, but each time you have it done, you're risking your life."

Ms Aderotimi's sister told London’s Evening Standard the family was devastated by her death.

"We're still in shock. We need to think about what we have to do," Vivian Adusei said.

Police have questioned the woman who they believe set up the appointment online and searched her home.
