An American family has spoken about their decision to allow their 10-year-old son to live life as a girl.
Parents Jennifer and John from Ohio have raised their child Jackie as a girl, despite being born a boy named Jack.
As a toddler, Jack was drawn to his sister's dolls and started dressing up in pink, with a fondness for ballerina outfits.
"My boy was always in sparkles and pretty shoes," Jennifer told US ABC's Nightline program.
Then when she was 10 she went to her mother in tears, telling her: "I'm a girl and I can't do this anymore".
At first John and Jennifer only let her wear girl's clothes in the house, but that soon progressed into allowing her to live fulltime as a girl, including going to school wearing girl's makeup.
But not everyone in the family is happy with Jackie's transformation, with her grandfather believing she is too young to be making such a life choice.
"I cannot accept that a nine- or 10-year-old can make decisions for himself that will be life lasting," he told Nightline.
While Jackie's parents are unsure about the future, they said her happiness is their main focus.
