An E.coli warning remains in place in some areas of the NSW Central Coast despite the most recent testing of the water supply returning negative results.

A Boil Water Alert was issued to residents of Kariong on Monday after routine testing detected E.coli bacteria in the water supply last week.

The affected water supply was given the all-clear on Tuesday after Gosford City Council carried out further testing.

However the alert will remain in place until the water supply has returned negative results over a number of days.

"Everything points to the fact that everything is back to normal and as long as we can confirm that, moving forward, then we can lift the Boil Water Alert," Manager of Water and Sewer Operations for Gosford Council, Michael Redrup said.

"The process is that we need to have successive days with clear results."

"If we get good results over a number of days and good disinfectant residuals then NSW Health will consider lifting the alert."

Until then Kariong residents are advised to boil all water used for drinking, cooking and cleaning teeth.

Mr Redrup said the levels of E.coli detected in the Kariong water supply were low and there had been no reports of illness.

"At the levels that we've indicated it's highly unlikely that anyone would be sick," he said.
