NRL stars such as Benji Marshall, Nathan Hindmarsh and Cooper Cronk have lent their faces and voices to a new campaign designed to boost Australia's organ and tissue donation rates.

They've fronted a 30-second television advertisement that screens nationally from Wednesday, urging Australians to talk about their wishes and that of their families.

The ad is running to promote DonateLife Week, which starts on February 19.

NRL ambassador and former Raiders captain Alan Tongue praised the league for getting involved and lending its weight to such an important issue.

In 2011, 337 organ donors saved or improved the lives of 1001 Australians - the highest number of donors since records began.

"NRL is such a powerful vehicle for us to get our messages across, and this is just a great thing to be involved with," the ex-skipper told AAP.

"I actually only brought it up with my own family after becoming involved, so it's vital to get that message across for Australians to start talking."

Australia had a donor rate of about 15 donors per million people or 14.9 dpmp in 2011, which was a jump from 13.8 dpmp in the previous year.
