A new KFC monster burger that uses two slabs of fried chicken in place of bread buns has gone on sale in the US to the dismay of nutrition experts.

The "Double Down Chicken Sandwich" contains two slices of bacon, pepper jack cheese, swiss cheese and sauce, wrapped between two fillets of chicken.

Would you eat this burger? Have your say here.

A television advertising campaign bills the US$4.99 ($6.00) Double Down as "so much 100 percent premium chicken, we didn't have room for a bun".

A spokesman for the Australian arm of KFC did not rule out the burger being sold locally in the future.

Ninemsn contacted a KFC store in Omaha, Nebraska, where an employee said sales of the Double Down had exceeded expectations.

But the burger, which does not appear on KFC's official website, has raised the ire of health experts.

"The world does not need [these burgers]," top Australian nutritionist Dr Rosemary Stanton said.

"These sorts of burgers have become a rite of passage for kids and young men ... but pity about your arteries, your waistline and your chin."

Burgers such as the Double Down made a mockery of fast food chains' persistent claims to provide healthy and balanced menus, Dr Stanton said.

Online food forums have been flooded with both criticism and support for the burger.

"Wow, I couldn't believe that American fast food has sunk this low," wrote one person on foodgeekery.com.

But another wrote: "Oh … oh my God. That is the best thing ever."

"I don't know what 'Colonel's Sauce' is, but it is like a party in my mouth."

Another person said he recently received an invitation to complete an online survey on the Double Down in exchange for US$10 KFC voucher.

KFC in Australia today issued a statement saying "we don't have this product in our plans at present".

What an absolutely stupid thing for KFC to do. A company like them should be more responsible in providing balanced meals as it is always the wrong sort of person who would attempt to eat somthing like that. How Bloody ridiculous.Keep them in America where 96.5% of the people are obese and will die younger than necesary. We have enough FATTTT people here and what a sight they are.
I am BOYCOTTING KFC until they bring that delightful looking burger to Australia......In the meantime stop teasing us..
Nothing like a double helping of dirty bird!!
everyone seems so concerned about what others are eating, or doing. I agree with some earlier comments. If you want to do it, then do it. If you can't stop that's your problem, no one elses. I say BRING IT ON. I want to try it also and not be deprived of the experience because others have no control. For those of us waiting, send it down under our mouths are waiting.
why don't they just call the burger 'heart attack waiting' i just got back from a holiday in the states and couldn't belive how disgusting all there food was everything was deep fried and soaking in fat! no wounder they could come up with a burger that gross. when you compare the junk food in the States to the same chains in Australia ours are much healther offering heart smart options and a varity of salads at almost every major chain and i would be very dispaointed if KFC in Australia brought this to our menus i for one will not supoprt it!
Can we stop attacking people with weight and health issues? To say that a fat person would enjoy this burger is mean-spirited and narrow minded. Same goes with "(just get) fatter" The question asked was whether or not we would try this burger... whether banning it is the right or wrong. It does not advocate changing your lifestyle to include this burger as part of your regular diet. It is just a new product that is available on the market.
No way, think of the fat and the cholesteral levels, which help to clog the arteries to the heart and other parts of the body, it may sound appealing, but you may well end up paying for it, with your health, later. I know, I have eaten some silly things in my time and wished I hadn't, so now I am trying to rectify that, with healthy eating and exercise.
I would eat that bad boy, then some hot wings with blue cheese dressing! I am a chef (a skinnny one that exercises 6 hrs a week) and would probably eat that once a month, on a Friday, watching a movie. I WANT ONE!!
I don't think I could eat this burger in one go and I really don't think it is a good healthy option for kids. Lots of cholesterol!!!
please bring this burger out! otherwise i may just have to buy 2 bacon fillet burgers and throw out the buns
