'Magnets' help reduce open heart surgery

In an Australian first, new technology at a Sydney hospital reduces the need for open heart surgery.

Westmead Hospital's new service uses powerful magnets to move a catheter within the heart.

The $4.3 million technology is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere and will benefit about 250 people a year, including around 70 children.

"What this technology means is people who need heart surgery can have it in a less invasive way, it reduces the need for open heart surgery," NSW Health Minister Carmel Tebbutt told reporters on Friday.

"It means that patients' recovery time is much quicker and it also means that the procedure can be more accurate and there's less risk of other damage to the heart.

"It really is extraordinary technology and it just shows some of the fabulous things that are happening in the NSW health system every single day."
