A teenager on trial for murdering her mother told police she saw her father use a knife to stab his wife twice.

On Tuesday a Brisbane Supreme Court jury was played a video of a police interview Kaihana Tahseen Hussain took part in the day after her mother, 41-year-old Shaheda Hussain, died at the family's rented apartment at Southport, on the Gold Coast.

Hussain, now 20, has pleaded not guilty to murdering her mother on October 9, 2006.

She has also pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of her father, Dr Muhammad Hussain.

In the interview, Hussain told police she had taken her father into the bedroom and blindfolded him so she could give him a "surprise" gift she brought back from her recent trip to Bangladesh.

She said while she was looking for the present in another room she could hear her parents arguing.

"My dad was not shouting, but talking quite aggressively," she told police.

"The next thing I knew, and this happened within like a split second, my dad had the knife in his hand and he stabbed my mum.

"I do know that the first time he didn't get it in ... I saw blood coming out the second time.

"That's when my mum started screaming.

"I completely froze at that moment."

Hussain told police she ran from the room.

"I didn't think of which way to go, I just ran," she said.

"He came after me, but he already had a stab wound."

When questioned about how Dr Hussain came to have a knife wound to his own abdomen, Hussain said she didn't know.

Earlier in the trial Dr Hussain took the stand and denied being the one who carried out the attack.

"I suggest, doctor, that you stabbed yourself and your wife," defence barrister Dennis Lynch said.

"No, I did not," Dr Hussain replied.

The crown is alleging Hussain attacked her parents because they wouldn't let her move to Sydney to be with her boyfriend, or allow her to convert from Islam to Christianity.

The trial continues.
