A doctor in training remains in a critical condition after an explosion in his Wangaratta unit.
Witnesses saw medical student Varun Arora, 23, running from his home with smoke coming from his body after the gas blast tore through his kitchen about 11.05am Monday morning.
The Melbourne University attendee ran about 100m down the street to Wangaratta Hospital — where he began his intern rounds three weeks ago — before collapsing on the complex lawn.
Bystanders tended to Mr Arora, who suffered burns to his face and chest, until he was placed in an induced coma by his hospital colleagues, the Border Mail reports.
He remains in a "critical but stable" condition after being airlifted to Melbourne, a spokesperson from The Alfred said.
The Border Mail reported witness Shane Jones as saying blast "went off like a bomb", which was heard at least 500m away.
The badly damaged unit block is owned by the hospital and regularly houses interns.
No one was in the neighbouring flats at the time of the explosion.
Mr Arora, who began his university degree in 2004, is due to celebrate his 24th birthday next Wednesday.
