An 82-year-old Rockhampton woman who died after being attacked on Australia Day has been described as an "old-school lady" at a public memorial.

Iris Temperley was allegedly raped and bashed beyond recognition while hanging out her washing in her backyard in George Street, Rockhampton.

She died in the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital on February 3, eight days after the assault.

About 100 people turned out to her public memorial on Wednesday at St Paul's Anglican Cathedral.

Jodie Temperley told the service that her grandmother was always there for the family.

"She would make you laugh when you wanted to cry or give you a bed when times were hard," she said.

Ms Temperley's other granddaughter, Donna Bickle, said her grandmother was an "old-school, a proper lady".

"People like her built our nation and Australia Day will never be the same for any of us," she said.

"She looked forward to our visits, with the jug always on the boil, bickies on the table and ready for a chat."

Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten said the attack had hit the community hard, Network Ten reported.

"Disbelief, revulsion, anger and fear has riled through this community," he said.

A manhunt was launched by police following the attack, and a day later an 18-year-old man was charged.

Police allege he bashed Ms Temperley in the face with a blunt object then sexually assaulted her.

He's been charged with murder, rape, stealing and property offences.

He is in custody and is due to reappear in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court on April 28.
