A man has been hospitalised with severe burns after being set alight when his car exploded in south-west Sydney overnight.
The man kicked his way through a fence to jump into a swimming pool after catching on fire when his car burst into flames in Rosemeadow at around 9.05pm on Thursday.
He suffered burns to his face, arms, hands and legs after the Honda CRV exploded while it was parked in his driveway.
A police spokesman said his wife heard the explosion from inside their house.
"She looked out the window and she saw her Honda CRV on fire," the spokesman said.
"Her husband entered the lounge room soaking wet with burns to his face, arms, hands and legs."
Early reports suggested that the explosion may have been caused by a firebomb but police said they were unable to confirm the claim.
The man is in a stable condition at Concord Hospital.
Police are planning to interview the man when he is in a condition to speak to them.
The car was completely destroyed, with minor damage reported to another vehicle.
