The Sydney winner of last night's $30 million Oz Lotto jackpot has failed to come forward and may not even be aware they've hit the jackpot.

The unregistered punter, who bought the ticket in Sydney's inner west, was the sole winner of last night's prize, one of the biggest ever in Australia.

"It's always quite nerve-wracking when you have a mystery winner of this scale," NSW Lotteries spokesman John Vineburg said.

"We'd like to get that little bit of paper out of their purse or wallet and into our hands before they misplace it."

Another concern is that the winner will accidentally announce their life-changing prize at their local store in a spontaneous moment of excitement.

"By definition if someone scans their winning ticket, they might start jumping up and down and shouting," Mr Vineburg said.

"But they might instantly regret identifying themselves."

The dividend sits among the highest winnings in Australian lotteries, with the entire tax-free $30 million won by a single Oz Lotto ticket.

Last Saturday's $20 million Lotto draw, by comparison, was split between 20 winners.

It remains unknown if last night's winner is a solo player or syndicate.

"Generally speaking the winner will check the ticket the following day, but it could be days, months or even years before we know the winner," Mr Vineburg said, adding that one unwitting 1997 Oz Lotto winner is yet to claim their $3.3 million prize.
