A senior Herald Sun journalist has been arrested after crashing his car into a pizza shop while driving almost three times over the legal limit, police claim.

Sport journalist Jon Anderson, 53, was charged after allegedly backing his car into the rear of the shop at High St, Malvern, around 7.30pm yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said the accident caused so much damage that surveyors were called in to reinforce the building.

"It appears he has accelerated into a roller door," she said.

"The car has dropped down about three feet into a rear store room, causing quite a bit of damage."

Rear supports were erected in the store room following fears about its structural safety, she said.

Police confiscated Anderson’s licence immediately after he allegedly blew a blood alcohol reading of 0.139.

He was taken to a nearby police station after the incident.

Anderson is a veteran journalist who has authored books on AFL footballers and he has featured regularly on Melbourne radio.

He has written countless articles for the Herald Sun, including one opinion piece in 2008 where he ruminates on AFL players' drinking habits.

In the opinion article, Anderson wrote that footballers drank less alcohol in modern times but that it would "continue to be an all too obvious presence in [their] life".
