A baby boy is alive and developing normally after being born almost 14 weeks premature in a hospital toilet in Melbourne.

Kian Richardson has survived a lung infection but still requires regular blood transfusions after his unexpected arrival in the bathroom at Monash Medical Centre on March 22.

His mother Tamara Richardson told the Knox Leader she was stunned to look down and see the 33cm-long baby in the toilet.

"I didn’t even know he had come out … I panicked and pressed the emergency button," she said.

A medical team rushed to Mrs Richardson's aid and administered the baby adrenaline after failing to find a heartbeat.

It took seven minutes for the boy to be resuscitated.

Mrs Richardson and her husband Evan named the 695g baby Kian, which is Gaelic for warrior.

Scans later showed Kian's brain was fully formed and had not been damaged in the birth.

The sudden arrival capped off an incredible fortnight for the couple after Mrs Richardson's waters broke on March 6, just 21 weeks into her pregnancy.

Doctors at the time warned that her baby stood no chance unless she could make it to 23 weeks.

Kian will spend at least another four months in a humidity crib until his weight reaches 1.8kg.
