Car smashes into shopping centre wall

Two elderly people have been hospitalised after a driver lost control and smashed into a glass wall at a shopping centre in Sydney.

Footage captured on the Nine News chopper showed the car had crashed into the glass at the St Ives shopping centre on Mona Vale Road.

An ambulance spokesman told ninemsn two people had been injured in the incident — an 83-year-old male and a 70-year-old female.

Both have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

It was not clear whether one or both of the injured people were in the car at the time of the crash.

The North Shore Times reports the driver suffered a mechanical failure before the out-of-control car clipped another vehicle and went over a letter box before smashing through the window.

Despite early fears that the crash had destabilised the building, the car has since been dislodged without incident.
