A 56-year-old Sydney man has died after his car ran off the road and plunged into the harbour last night.
The man, believed to be a local to the North Shore suburb of Mosman, crashed through a metal barrier in his Toyota Rav4 four-wheel-drive and ran into Sydney Harbour at around 8:50pm.
When water police officers located the car submerged about 10m underwater, they found the driver dead.
The car crossed into the wrong lane and onto the footpath before smashing through the barrier on Centenary Drive, Mosman.
The cause of the crash was unknown, police said.
"As far as we know there were no other cars involved, but we need to do a post-mortem on the crash," a police spokesperson said.
The car was removed from the harbour by crane and taken to a police holding yard.
The man was returning from dinner with friends at the nearby Mosman Bay Marina at the time of the accident, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
