A US marine has died in a skydiving accident while he was in Australia on a holiday won from The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
North Carolina woman Cherilyn McGraw scored the trip from DeGeneres in a January episode of the talk show. She travelled to Australia with her husband Brandon last week, and the two went skydiving on Saturday in Euroa, about 100km north of Melbourne.
Ian Matthews from Euroa Skydive, which led the jump, told the Daily News that Brandon, 33, watched Cherilyn do a tandem jump before making his own solo descent.
"A short time before landing, [Brandon] suddenly began turning his parachute dramatically to the left and right and eventually crashed into the ground," Matthews said.
Paramedics were unable to revive Brandon, who had gone into cardiac arrest, and he died at the scene.
Matthews said 33-year-old Matthews, who had recently returned from Afghanistan, was an experienced skydiver with more than "a few jumps under his belt."
Brandon had completed all the safety checks and provided documentation necessary before attempting a solo jump.
High winds may have contributed to the accident, according to local media.
Cherilyn later posted pictures of Brandon inside Euroa Skydive's plane, saying that "he was happy and doing what he loved."
