The death of a 55-year pedestrian in Victoria has brought the national holiday road toll to four.
The Warragul man was struck by a semi-trailer while walking in the middle of the left lane on the Princes freeway along a darkened stretch of road at Trafalgar, south-east of Melbourne, at 2.20am (AEDT) on Saturday police said. He died at the scene.
Police said the 38-year-old truck driver was uninjured.
The death was Victoria's second fatality this Christmas holiday season so far.
Meanwhile, in central Queensland, a motorcyclist died in a high speed crash after earlier evading police attempts to stop him.
A police spokesman said the man died at the scene after striking a pedestrian on Hospital Road, Emerald, about 2.45am (AEST).
It was the first road death in Queensland this holiday season.
There has been one death in the Northern Territory, and all other states and territories remained fatality free on Saturday.
(EDS: National road toll figures are for the period 0001 December 19 to 2359 January 2. Some states and territories have different periods.)
