A 10-metre-wide candelabra made from sand has been built at Australia's most famous beach to mark the beginning of the Jewish Festival of Lights.

Sand artist Steve Machell, who began sculpting sand in 1998, set to work on his latest project at Sydney's Bondi Beach about 10am (AEDT) on Sunday morning.

He was still working on it about 5pm (AEDT), when local children joined in.

"I'm not sure that they were any help," Rabbi Mendel Kastel, chief executive of the Jewish House Crisis Centre said.

The eight-armed candelabra, or Chanukah Menorah, was completed by 7.45 pm (AEDT), when it was lit before about 600 people.

The eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights, also known as Chanukah, celebrates triumph of freedom.
