Two men have been shot and another three stabbed in an "alcohol-fuelled" brawl between two families in Sydney's southwest, police say.

A further two men were also taken to hospital with head injuries.

Police were called just before midnight (AEDT) on Monday after reports of brawling and that about 100 people had gathered in MacBeth Way in Rosemeadow, near Campbelltown.

A police riot squad attended the scene, with a helicopter and dog squad members also on hand.

Three men suffered stab wounds, two others had head injuries and police found two more men in a car - one who had been shot in the back and one shot in the buttocks.

The seven were taken to hospital for treatment and all are in a stable condition.

Police Superintendent Stuart Smith said the brawl was not gang-related, but the result of a dispute between two families.

"Well, it's an interesting Monday night, one that's probably had a reasonable result," Supt Smith told Macquarie Radio on Tuesday morning.

"It would appear that it's certainly alcohol-related but it is not a gang-related event.

"It would appear that at the centre of this is a dispute between two family groups."

A 16-year-old boy, in hospital under police custody, was expected to face questioning later on Tuesday, Supt Smith said.

"At this stage we haven't made an arrest," he said.
