A South Australian winemaker has admitted it may have misled consumers in a free beer sales promotion offered last year.

Moving Juice Pty Ltd offered a "free" and "absolutely free" slab of Coopers beer in February, March and April 2008 to consumers who purchased a dozen bottles of its Dog Leg wine.

But the price of the wine had been increased to incorporate part or most of the cost of the beer given away in the promotion.

The company also displayed "was-now" price comparisons on its website in April when it had neither sold nor offered the higher "was" price before November 2007.

Moving Juice has agreed to pay $2,000 - an estimate of the profits it made in the promotions - to a charity of its choosing and publish corrections in newspapers, its catalogues and on its website.

"Special offers of discounted or 'free' goods can be very effective in advertising, however, the advertised price savings must be real and not illusory," the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Graeme Samuel said.
