Police are investigating the drowning of a 13-year-old girl on the NSW Central Coast.

The teenager was with family and friends at a park in Budgewoi when she jumped from a footbridge into a local creek at 5.15pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

Witnesses told police they saw the girl somersault into the water, but she didn't resurface.

A search was carried out by police, relatives and members of the public at the scene.

Police located the girl minutes later and began CPR.

She was rushed to Wyong Hospital in a critical condition and died at about 10.30pm.

The girl's body has been taken to Newcastle for a post-mortem examination.
