A man who sells adult toys for a living has been accused of selling cut-price stun guns on the streets of Sydney.
Police say they seized 41 stun guns during a raid on the man's Sans Souci home on Thursday night.
They also seized more than $173,000 in cash.
"I can't recall a seizure of such (size) in the last few years," said Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Peter McErlain.
Stun guns had been used in the past to commit crimes, he said.
Officers were working to determine if the devices allegedly hawked on Sydney's streets were sold for personal protection or for criminal use.
Mr McErlain said police were also trying to determine if they were imported.
Similar devices, which must be pressed into the body to stun, are sold for personal protection in the US.
"If they're on the market and available, just like firearms, criminals will take a liking to that type of weapon," Mr McErlain said.
"There's certainly been isolated incidents where this type of device has been used in the commission of certain types of crimes."
Police allege the 41-year-old man charged over the haul was selling the stun guns for about $100 each, well below the going rate on the street.
"The value on the street, they could be sold on for anywhere between $300 and $500," Mr McErlain said.
"We will be alleging this particular man onsold them for round about the $100 mark."
So far the man is the only person charged, but police are investigating if others may be involved.
"It appears the stun guns may have been in his possession for a short period of time," Mr McErlain said.
"But we are following up a lot of inquiries in relation to where they have come from and how he came to be in possession of them."
The man has been charged with possessing a prohibited weapon and two counts of possessing suspected stolen goods.
He will face Kogarah Local Court later on Friday. The penalty for possession of prohibited weapons is up to 14 years in prison.
Mr McErlain would not say what led police to the man's house, but said a quantity of entertainment games was also seized in the raid.
