The driver of a truck-mounted crane has spinal and other injuries after the machine toppled off a Queensland bridge and burst into flames.

Police said the crane vehicle came off the Jack Philps Bridge over Terry Creek about 30km east of Collinsville, south of Townsville, early on Tuesday.

"... an industrial crane has driven over the side of the bridge. A fire has started in the vehicle causing extensive damage to the structure," police said.

Police initially said the male driver suffered only minor injuries.

But a statement from the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter later said the 44-year-old Bowen man had been flown to Townsville with spinal injuries and cuts, including to his head.

The accident on the bridge, off the Bowen Developmental Road also known as Peter Dellamothe Road, caused traffic diversions.
