The gunman killed during the attempted armed robbery of a cash van in Sydney reportedly used to work with the guard who shot him.

Nathan Brodbeck, 32, died when a Brinks security guard shot him in the chest during the incident on Monday afternoon, on Sydney's northern beaches.

He approached the three guards and drew a firearm when they were stopped outside an RSL club in Pittwater Road at Dee Why.

One of the guards, 29, fired three shots, striking Brodbeck, who later died at Royal North Shore Hospital.

The Seven Network on Thursday reported Brodbeck used to work with the security firm.

It also reported another man charged over the failed robbery was also a Brinks security guard, and was still employed with the company at time of the attack.

On Tuesday night, police arrested Franjo Vlado Santalab, 32, after he was admitted to St George Hospital.

He has since been charged with recruiting Brodbeck - believed to have served six months with the navy in Iraq - to assist in the robbery.

He was also charged with being an accessory before the fact.

State Crime detectives had raided Brinks' head office in Alexandria after allegedly tracing the gun used in the heist to Brinks, Seven said.

Police will allege the pistol was signed out of the company and given to Brodbeck, who used to work for the company alongside the guard who shot him.
