A wild duck found with an arrow through its head is recovering at a veterinary centre south of Perth as environment officers seek public help to track down its attacker.
The injured Pacific Black Duck was captured in the Coodanup area near Mandurah by a West Australian Sea Bird Rescue volunteer helped by a Mandurah City ranger on Saturday.
Vets at the Coastal Veterinary Centre in Mandurah removed the arrow and have been caring for the bird.
Department of Environment and Conservation wildlife officer Cameron Craigie said the attack was senseless and the department was appealing for public help to find the bowman.
"Using harmless animals like ducks for target practice is something that is not only illegal, it is completely inhumane, and it is sad to think that someone could do this to such a defenceless creature."
The duck was extremely lucky to have survived and it was fortunate the arrow had not caused significant damage to bones or vital organs, Mr Craigie said in a statement.
Pacific Black Ducks are protected under WA's Wildlife Conservation Act, and penalties of up to $4000 can be imposed for breaches of the act.
The duck could be sent to a carer for further rehabilitation before being returned to the wild, Mr Craigie said.
