Another Victorian town is shutting down and its residents relocating as it prepares for floodwaters to peak.

Victoria's "friendly river town" of Charlton is expecting a wet week ahead as floodwaters course down the main street.

Many local businesses closed their doors after major flood warnings concerning Avoca River, which runs through the town.

"The whole street has been cut off and everyone's been asked to stay at home," Jill Gretgrix of the Charlton Cricket Club told ninemsn.

"All the local businesses are closed and sandbagged."

Residents have also been sandbagging their properties and finding temporary accommodation elsewhere as an incident control centre continues to monitor water levels.

Charlton's IGA remains open and hopes to stay that way despite flood warnings.

"It's flooded out the front but we're still open for business," said IGA employee Rebecca Giles.

Food levels are due to peak this afternoon.

"There's still a lot more damage to be done and a lot more challenges ahead," Ms Gretgrix said.

The SES has warned people to adhere to road closures and avoid driving through floodwaters.
