A Queensland man travelled across the country "armed" with a sex toy and a pornographic DVD in order to engage in sex with a fictitious 12-year-old girl, a Perth judge says.

John Andrew Wakeling, 41 was sentenced to at least one year and two months behind bars for procuring a person he believed to be under 13 for sexual activity.

For three weeks between April and May this year, Wakeling engaged in almost daily internet chat conversations with a girl he believed was 12 years-old.

In fact the person he was chatting to was a police officer.

The District Court in Perth heard the chat conversations between Wakeling and the 12-year-old girl were extremely graphic.

In her sentencing remarks Judge Troy Sweeney told the court: "You asked her whether she had done anything before. She said she had kissed a boy but she didn't know what she was doing."

At one point he asked her what she was wearing under her "Elmo pyjamas".

Judge Sweeney said: "You told her you were secret mates and that no-one could ever know. You said lots of girls have sex at 12."

As the days went by, Wakeling told the girl he was flying over to Perth to meet her.

Wakeling enquired whether there was a motel near the girl's bus stop and arranged to book a room in which he would bring her back in her school uniform.

Wakeling genuinely sought to meet the girl, the judge said, having forked out money on a rental car, accommodation and flights, telling the girl "I wouldn't have spent $2600 for nothing", the judge said.

Wakeling was later intercepted by police waiting for the girl in a Perth park, with a search warrant of his hotel room finding those items.

He eventually pleaded guilty to the charges.

The judge sentenced him to two years and three months in jail, with a non-parole period of half that time.
