A baby girl died in a Sydney hospital after her mother reportedly had to wait 40 minutes for a doctor during a critical time of the birth.

Ayesha Kashif's infant daughter was born at Westmead Hospital suffering brain damage and massive organ failure on August 31.

She died after 30 hours on life support, the Seven Network has reported.

Ms Kashif said she knew there was something wrong during her 18-hour labour and had asked for help.

She reportedly had to wait 40 minutes for a doctor during a critical time of the birth, when the baby appeared to be in distress.

"This family deserves answers and the public needs reassurance staffing levels are adequate at the state's largest hospital," opposition health spokeswoman Jillian Skinner said.

"There are serious questions that need answering in this case. Chiefly: could this baby have been saved if there were staff present and able to help during the vital period of the birth?

"She spent a prolonged period of time pleading with medical staff to examine her and her child, but by the time a doctor arrived it was too late."

As well as asking whether enough staff were on duty that night, she demanded to know whether they had the right skills.

"Will this incident be fully investigated, and the family kept informed?" she asked.

Ms Skinner passed on her "deepest condolences" to the girl's family.
